Using Eco-Friendly Materials to Sustainably Make the Best Quality Doormats.

When we started Door Mates, we searched far and wide to find the best manufacturer of Coir Doormats, so we could work closely with them to create a highly effective doormat, sustainably made from eco-friendly materials.

COIR – One of the most popular and effective materials for front doormats actually comes from coconuts.

Coir (pronounced Coy-er) comes from the fibrous outer layer of coconut husks, which traditionally end up as waste material during the industrial harvesting of coconuts, grown for the coconut flesh and water.

Coir’s natural sustainability makes it a natural and eco-friendly alternative to synthetic fibre or rubber doormats. The long course Coir fibres are anti-bacterial and naturally create a hardwearing surface to effectively remove dirt, moisture, and debris from footwear, acting like a brush on the bottom of your shoes.

Our search for the perfect doormat took us to India, where coconuts grow in abundance and most Coir Mats sold around the world are made. This is where our beautiful Coir Doormats are meticulously made by a world leading manufacturer that has been making Coir Mats for more than 100 years. 

Using the best quality Coir, the fibres of our Door Mates are tightly woven to produce a durable doormat with minimal shedding. While most Coir Doormats are made with a PVC backing, we use an all-natural, non-slip latex backing. This latex is collected from rubber trees located nearby where our Coir Mats are made.
